KLEARANI MUHOME AT LUSAKA HOTEL |

On the 3rd of April 2016 was a nice chilled day and as my usual thing, I texted one of my very close friends who is currently studying in South Africa but she has lived most of her life in Malawi.
I tend to admire her drive to how she is very passionate with things like ushering in church, praise team attendance and many more.
This is very different from me due my traditional church background which really seems to be community based and structured with enthusiastic old people.
According to my
observation, this generation has more churches than ever recorded before.
According to statistics, churches have sprang up from….percent to …percent and
still raising.
Apart from the international right to worship, it also stands
that people now have a wide range of churches to choose. But why am I talking
about churches instead of other topics, one might wonder.
Churches act as
recognized institution.
They tend to aid to people’s spiritual life and also
they help in other ways like provision of basic needs to the people due to their
missionary works. Yes church today have been distorted but am sure there are
real churches which believe in the common good and other person development.
Churches have a lot of influence in one’s life and to some they even shape
their personality. Stereotypes off course are also generated from churches.
Nevertheless one
can talk about the functionality of churches the whole day but here I would
like to focus on how we as the youth of today present ourselves in church. I
mean our physical appearance which we take to church.
Taking you back to
my friend in South Africa in intrigued me to see how she texted me in a
frustrated tone, complaining about how ‘some girl has worn a crop top to
church’, according to her she talked of being destructed and indicated that if
she was an usher that day she would have sent her back home.
My reply was
simple as I suggested that ‘such people are just to be left’ but after a few
minutes, I thought to myself that are such people really just to be left
unguided?
It really puzzled my mind because I recall watching a movie titled ‘God is not dead’ which I saw American
women dressed in very short dresses and heading to church and off course who
are we to judge but this is not America and what my
friend saw was not in the movie.
Similarly, I have
seen it too on my way to church, in church and from my fellow friends too. It
is shocking to find out the way people react to such types of dressing.
I even
turn my head in disbelieve to make sure my eyes are not deceiving me but in actual
fact such reveling dressing whether it is appropriate for church or not, it
still stands that it is destructive and draws unnecessary attention.
Taking it to the
Bible, the body is the temple of God and for years I have admired Muslim women
for their level of respect they pay to their body with their full body cover
which to me only stands as a true sacred temple of God.
Where ever they go from
school to Mosque to pool side to the Olympics the body is still very covered.
This draws good attention of respect and some guys even joke around saying it
gives them the pleasure to have the urge to know what is hidden inside.
Meanwhile some
Christian both young and old women have no problem to show parts of their
bodies. People try and do look formal whether on Sunday or Saturday when going
to church but formality has now been courted with fashion.
Now there are
beautifully made dresses and skirt and top with materials which hug the body
just perfectly, so those bum dimples, the thigh cellulite, the cinnamon brown
cleavage, the love-handles, the belly ring and many more underneath parts are
put to display, yet the cloth is so covering but tight and body hugging.

This
bring destruction. Because proper dressing is not only wearing covered clothed
but the right covered clothes.
Don’t get me
wrong, I am not advocating for lose long umbrella skirt or dresses with baggy
blouses sagging down our waist no. But decent clothes which are not aimed to
make our bum stick out, our hips stand out, flat stomachs put in check and
breast hanging firmly; no.
The long thigh or bottom of bum leveled slits, the
lowered neck line closed to the bosom, the skin between your bosom and waist is
ok to wear but maybe not at church.
During my old days
and I know some churches they send away women who used to in short clothes and
wear sleeveless tops and churches want you to stay for the service by simply
handing you a rap or chitenge to cover yourself appropriately.
It is known
already that women are a spectacular creatures, one with beautiful carvings,
and delicate skin.
Some can argue that in the first place African used to walk
almost naked but face the changes, we are not in those days.
These days a body
of woman has been put in the open, billboards, magazines, other Medias so
honestly there is a lot to hid, and a lot to keep sacred.
